Whatever your tastes, there will be something for you and your family and there are plenty of options to suit every wallet, too. The majority of places are fully able to cater for allergies and dietary requirements and a wide range of our local businesses are child and/or dog friendly as well, so the whole group can find somewhere to enjoy an evening or a lunch break.
We do have to start with fish and chips – we are a seaside resort after all! Whilst there are many takeaway options, there are also a large number of eat in restaurants still using the same quality and often very locally caught seafood. Many of these can be found on the South Bay and Foreshore Road, several of which such a Winking Willy’s and The Golden Grid have been there for many, many years. A more recent addition, located on Eastborough, is Catch 55. This venue has fantastic views out across South Bay from their huge windows at the rear of the restaurant – if you can get one of those tables, it is definitely worth it! The staff there have always been amazingly friendly and helpful, both in the evening and at lunch time, despite how busy they can get. The menu offers a wide range of options including very tasty fish cakes and an enormous seafood sharing platter full of calamari, prawns and fish goujons, as well as the classic haddock or cod. A children’s menu is available, as are deals for senior citizens. The restaurant is fully licensed but also has a good range of soft drinks – a cup of tea or a dandelion and burdock are classic choices!
If pub grub and relaxed dining is what you’re after, we regularly send our guests up to the Scarborough Arms pub, just a 10 minute walk away from us at Kenways. Whilst it can be worth booking at busy times of the year, particularly on a weekend, you can often walk straight in to a table and the very friendly staff will always do their best to squeeze you in. All the meals you would expect can be found on their menu, with a range of 'specials' in place at certain times of the year or on special occasions. The portions are huge! They also have a well kept bar with a range of hand-pulled beers on offer at any time.
If you want to stay even closer to home, The Hideout at the bottom of our road is a very convenient option. This does tend to split opinion with our guests as some still mourn the loss of the Coffee Bean café which was in the same venue for decades - this is definitely a different type of vibe! Offering delicious burgers, hand made pizzas, pulled meat to die for and a great selection of vegan food as well. It is very much relaxed dining with modern music playing and is very welcoming to both families and dogs. The owners are big Scarborough Athletic FC fans and, as well as the memorabilia on display, there is often an offer for football fans eating there before a home game.
Italian food is often a very popular choice. There are a large number of options in Scarborough, from the bigger chains like Ask in a beautiful spot on the harbour front, to long standing independents like Gianni’s which always scores highly on TripAdvisor. Our favourite, however, is Il Piatto located at the very end of Bar Street, opposite the Grand Hotel. The food, which ranges from the expected pizza and pasta dishes to some really authentic fish, veal and steak dishes, is always of an exceptional standard. Only open in the evenings, it is a very pleasant environment for a meal as a couple or with a larger group.
More vibrant tastes can be catered for in a range of great restaurants offering food from the middle East and beyond. Az has been a firm favourite with us and our guests for a long time and is again conveniently located just a few minutes walk away on Columbus Ravine. It has recently rebranded itself as Nicosia but is still run by the same family and the delicious Turkish food cooked by the same wonderful chef. Again, great vegetarian options are available alongside fantastic chicken and lamb dishes. Some are spicey, all are very tasty! Similar in style is Lezzet who class themselves as a Mediterranean bistro. Found on Aberdeen Walk in the town centre, the friendly, cosy and vibrant atmosphere is matched by the colourful and well-presented food full of flavour. Open all day, it’s a great stop off for lunch if you need a break from shopping!
Eat Me Café is found in the Stephen Joseph Theatre and is open all through the day and into the early evening. Offering a great mix of fusion food combining English and Thai/Vietnamese/Japanese favourites, there is something interesting for everyone. Cooked with a real passion and with a massive specials board that changes every month, the place is often buzzing with diners from 11-8. It is definitely worth booking in here for an evening meal as it is understandably very popular with the pre-theatre going crowd.
We are very spoilt for Indian food in and around the town centre. There are many places which offer excellent deals such as half-price food on a Wednesday and a Sunday at both Royal Tandoori and Eastern Paradise. Our favourite for excellent food and a very luxurious eating atmosphere, however, is Scarborough Tandoori next to the Casino on St Thomas St.
For a more special occasion, one of our very favourite places to eat is Embers on Victoria Road. Only tiny, it is amazing how much taste and atmosphere the staff can squeeze in! The have an ever changing menu of seasonal produce, all cooked in their wood fired ovens. Beautiful homemade complimentary breads are an excellent complimentary bonus but make sure to save room for their fabulous desserts! They have an excellent range of cocktails, many designed on site just for their customers. The staff are truly exceptional, they know everything about the food and drink they are serving and will always go the extra mile for their customers.
We’re always excited for new eating experiences – eating and drinking is our favourite hobby! Café Fish which has been a fabulous seafood dining experience for many years is due to re-open in its new location on Bar Street in the next few weeks and we are very much looking forward to welcoming them back as soon as possible. Michelin-starred chef, Thomas Carr is opening his new restaurant Thomas Carr by the Coast a few minutes walk away from us in spring 2025.
There are also plenty of lovely places just on the outskirts of Scarborough if you’re able to make a short drive which we’ll perhaps make the subject of another blog, especially since they offer some of the best Sunday roasts. We’re always happy to recommend places whilst you’re staying with us, though, so always feel free to ask or to get in touch before your stay if you want to get somewhere booked.
